The Region
I A LITTLE HISTORY
Mainland Greece's great lake.
The artificial Lake Kremasta was created in 1965 with the completion of the eponymous earth-fill dam — at the time one of Europe's largest. It covers 81 km² and holds 4.5 billion m³ of water.
It collects the waters of four rivers — Achelous, Agrafiotis, Tavropos, and Trikeriotis — channeling them to the Kastraki hydroelectric plant. The system generates 9% of Greece's hydroelectric energy.
Around the lake stretch the Agrafa, one of Greece's most archaic and remote mountain regions. Stone villages, Byzantine monasteries, hiking trails, and wilderness compose a landscape that has remained unchanged for centuries.
To the south, the Panaitoliko massif rises above the lake with notable summits — Koutoupas and Tsoka — closing the horizon with its forested slopes. Its springs feed the streams that drain into the waters of Kremasta.
